Antarctica has no permanent human residents, but it has plenty of locals. The penguins are the true inhabitants here. Gentoos with their bright orange beaks and white eye patches. Chinstraps with the distinctive black line under their chin — looking perpetually disappointed. And Adelies, the comedians of the ice, stealing pebbles from each other’s nests. We watched a leopard seal patrol the waters while a colony of 20,000 gentoos went about their business. Absolutely surreal.
