Crossing the Polar Circle at 66°33’S

Today we crossed 66 degrees, 33 minutes south — the Antarctic Polar Circle. Only a handful of ships make this crossing each season. The captain cracked open a bottle of champagne, and we stood on deck at midnight with the sun still blazing above the horizon. 24-hour daylight is a trip. Your body loses all sense of time. We toasted to the explorers who came before — Amundsen, Scott, Shackleton — and marveled at how they did this in wool coats and wooden ships.
